Commissioner Elect Salim Adofo’s Message
We did it! We became commissioner!
Thank you to everyone that voted for me, donated and supported the campaign in anyway they could.
I was told if you talk that Black Stuff you can’t win. I was told if you use the word hotep, wear dashiki’s and one of them little muslim hats people won’t support you. I was told if you “TOO BLACK” people won’t donate any money. I was told I was too radical and would not not succeed without the support of white people. Well we see how that all… went lol.
The people have spoken and I truly appreciate what they had to say! It was a long, difficult, yet beautiful journey.
This journey didn’t start when I filed the petition to be on the ballot, it started when my ancestors decided to fight back. It started when we decided to have self-determination, self-respect and self-defense of our community! It started when I had to learn to apologize for my mistakes and humble myself. It started when I realized I wasn’t as bad as I thought I was and needed to humble myself.
It started when I joined the National Black United Front (NBUF) 20 years ago and had to stand in the rain holding post. It started when I had to forgo many a night to read the writings of Winnie Mandela, Malcolm X, Steve Biko, and Assata Shakur. It started when I had to carry the bags of many elders across the country. It started when I was the first one to arrive at the program and I had to set up chairs. It started when I was the last one to leave the program, because I had to clean toilets. This journey started at the corner of Malcolm X Ave and MLK Ave with a table, bull horn and some can goods. Yet and still the journey is not over. The work has yet to be finished. We must continue to organize.
We won because we love the people. We won because we studied, organized and put resources in the hands of Black people. Plain and simple.
