Africa Surpasses 150,000 Deaths Linked to Militant Islamist Groups in Past Decade

Driven by escalating violence in the Sahel, Somalia, and Lake Chad Basin, the 22,307 fatalities linked to militant Islamist groups in Africa over the past year sustain a record level of lethality observed since 2023—and represent a 60-percent increase from the 2020-2022 period.

In this timeseries event mapping analysis of militant Islamist violence in Africa, “Africa Surpasses 150,000 Fatalities Linked to Militant Islamist Groups over the Past Decade,” the Africa Center for Strategic Studies reviews the scale, scope, and trendlines of this threat for each region on the continent.

The Sahel and Somalia have experienced more militant Islamist-related fatalities over the past decade (each over 49,000) than any other region. The Lake Chad Basin countries, meanwhile, have suffered an estimated 39,000 fatalities over this timeframe. Collectively, these three regions account for 99 percent of the militant Islamist-linked fatalities in Africa during the past year. Militant Islamists groups are also expanding their reach with an estimated 950,000 square kilometers (367,000 square miles) of populated territories—roughly the size of Tanzania—outside government control.
