Vantage Point Vignette
Comments and Commentary by Dr. Ron Daniels
Perhaps the outrageous and racist decision by the Supreme Court of the United States ending Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitians should have been predictable. At least three of the Justices on this rightwing majority court were appointed by a President of the United States that called Haiti, the first Black Republic in this hemisphere, a shithole country. He also openly fabricated lies about Haitians legally residing in Springfield, Ohio, claiming they were eating the dogs and pets of their neighbors; an outrageous, blasphemous lie repeated by his slavish MAGA mad Vice-President JD Vance. Fortunately, Ohio’s Republican Governor, Mike DeWine, the Mayor of the City of Springfield and leaders in the business community were decent enough to come forward to testify that Haitian immigrants have revived the dying economy in Springfield and that their removal would be devastating.

These righteous testimonies notwithstanding, Stephen Miller, the white supremacist Senior Policy Advisor to Donald J. Trump was eager to maintain favor with his egomaniacal master. He deliberately targeted Haitians who have fled disastrous and terrifying conditions in their homeland to fulfill Trump’s campaign pledge to execute the largest mass deportation of immigrants in the history of this nation. Despite the racist lies and fabrications by Trump and MAGA allies like J.D. Vance, six out of nine Justices claimed to see no racial animus in the racist statements of the President of the United States and his minions. The Justices used the same rationale for gutting the Voting Rights Act of 1965 to create anxiety, fear and terror in the lives of hundreds of thousands of Haitian immigrants in this country by stripping them of legitimate TPS.

It Is absolutely astonishing that a nation and people, Haiti and the Haitian people, that have contributed so much to the evolution and development of the USA, are treated with such disdain and disregard by this country. Since its inception, Haiti has been plagued by destructive invasions, domination and interference by a thankless USA which has induced chromic impoverishment and instability in the first Black Republic.

In the most recent period, Haiti has never totally recovered from one of the most devasting earthquakes in this hemisphere. This catastrophic event resulted in the deaths of an estimated 300,000 people, the destruction 50% of the buildings in the nation’s Capital of Port Au Prince and displaced over 1 million people, some of whom fled these conditions to temporarily relocate in other nations including the USA. And, for the past several years thousands of Haitians have fled their homeland because ruthless, cartel-like gangs have seized up to 80% of the Capital and huge swaths of the rest of the nation inflicting a reign of terror with kidnappings, extortion, rape and murder.
These are documented facts that make the case for TPS for those who fled their homeland to the USA and wish to remain here and contribute to this nation as they have in Springfield, OH and cities across this country until it is safe to return to their beloved nation. The failure to protect Haitians under these conditions is outrageous, “cruel and unusual punishment” which flies in the face of Constitution and the professed values of this nation.

It’s time for the hate-filled bullying by Trump and his henchman Stephen Miller to stop. And it’s not just Stephen Miller, it’s also prominent MAGA supporters like Megyn Kelly who unapologetically blurted out on her podcast: “We know our country is better than yours. That’s because we filled it with our work ethic, culture, and values. You being here only dilutes it for us… Go back to f—ing Haiti!”

It’s time for friends of Haiti and the Haitian people, the beloved community, to stand up against racism and white supremacy that has tragically become the norm in America. We need a massive Haitian Day on the Hill, Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., where Haitians can tell their story to Members of the House of Representatives, the Senate, America and the World. We must support our Haitian sisters and brothers in their righteous appeal to the decency of the likes of Governor Mike DeWine and others who have the courage to dispel lies with truth. Our Haitian sisters and brothers deserve protection against bigotry and hate and the right to TPS until conditions change in their home. We must be their protection. A Haitian Day on Capitol Hill is the imperative of the day. Let’s do it!
