Black Law Enforcement Organizations from throughout New York State, which included The Grand Council of Guardians, 100 Blacks in Law Enforcement Who Care, Law Enforcement Alliance, Blacks in Law Enforcement of America, National Latino Officers Association of America and others gathered on Wednesday, July 30, 2014 at One Police Plaza, to voice their outrage of the lack of control and accountability of Commissioner Bratton and Mayor de Blasio of the NYPD when it come to Police Criminality among NYPD rank and file.
The recent killing of Eric Garner — a man killed by NYPD Officers while using an illegal chokehold to restrain him— is just apiece in a larger puzzle of deep-rooted “isms” in the institution of law enforcement in the NYPD.
Since the exposure of the Garner choking, videos have surfaced on social media and in the news of other “out of control” NYPD Officers clearly violating “Use of Force” Policy and Procedures. Like the Eric Garner incident, officers receive only minimum punishment.
“The Broken Window Theory of policing used by Commissioner Bratton is a Broken Policy and Theory. Commissioner Bratton has used it as another cover for NO TOLERANCE policing,” declared Damon K. Jones of Blacks In Law Enforcement
There has been no clear evidence that his theory has actually produced better living conditions for the communities it is has been applied to. The end result is police officers harassing a certain community for minor offences and instead of building stronger relationships with the communities; the relationships are strained and highly combustible.
Another reason for the outrage from black law enforcement organizations is Mayor de Blasio in an attempt to once again but a band-aid on a bullet wound, has to date had meetings with the NAACP and Al Sharpton, but not any of the Black Law Enforcement organizations, victim organizations or oversight organizations. It is their belief that instead of implementing new improved policies for public safety, prevention and accountability the Mayor’s intentions are more of the same policies that recent events show do not work. Black law enforcement organizations made it clear that simply improving on current policies that are in place now is no longer an option.
“We have seen the civil rights of our mothers, sisters, fathers and brothers repeatedly violated and abused,” says Darrin Green of Nassau County Sheriff’s Dept “How many more reports of police misconduct and criminality must we hear about before there is true accountability of officers that cross the line and violate policies and procedures in NYPD?
