Warns against return to “Giuliani Style” policing

Dr. Ron Daniels, President of the Institute of the Black World 21st Century (IBW) called on New York’s Mayor Eric Adams to convene an urgent Summit meeting involving a broad cross-section of stakeholders to explore just and safe solutions to the epidemic of gun violence, crime and fratricide/murders in New York.

Dr. Daniels issued the call on his weekly radio program, Vantage Point, which airs Mondays on New York’s WBAI, 99.5 FM (SEE VIDEO BELOW). The call comes on the heels of President Biden’s high-profile visit to New York to meet with Mayor Adams, law enforcement and elected officials to outline his administration’s approach to addressing the epidemic of gun violence. The President also visited a community mediation center.

Dr. Daniels argued that the Summit should address the public’s legitimate fears and anxieties about crime and violence and secure input and buy-in from representatives of all sectors of the city, including faith, labor, civic and business leaders. He suggested that it was critically important to hear the voices and recommendations of representatives of community-based organizations as well as police and criminal justice reform advocates and violence interrupters working in affected communities.

Reflecting on the response to past spikes in crime and gun violence, Dr. Daniels warned against a return to what he termed “Giuliani style” policing. “We can’t go back to the days of stop- and-frisk, the shadowy Streets Crime Unit and para-military squads that inflicted so much harm particularly on Black and Brown communities, he said. “A Summit that brings together all sectors of the community can devise solutions that focus on public safety in a way that will create just, safe, wholesome and sustainable communities. This kind of inclusive Summit can create a model/template for other cities across the country,” he concluded.

Ronald Hampton, former Executive Director of the National Black Police Association, a retired officer from the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Police Department and Chairman of IBW’s Police Justice and Accountability Task Force said, “It is critically important that we have a comprehensive and inclusive conversation about public safety and law enforcement with institutions, agencies and non- governmental organizations that work in our neighborhoods every day. Our Task Force is willing to assist the process in whatever way we can.”
Dr. Daniels, aka the Professor in radioland, closed his appeal by saying, “We await a response from our Mayor, Eric Adams.”
