Flooding caused by Hurricane Harvey in Southeast TX  (Air National Guard photo by Staff Sgt. Daniel J. Martinez)

Hotep Family,

I have visited Port Arthur several times over the years, so I know the community quite well. It is overwhelmingly Black with a significant low-income population. Over the past few days, over a thousand of it’s citizens, including well over 1,000 seniors, have been evicted from Section 8 housing because of mold infestation which has left them with virtually no other housing accommodations.

I just made a contribution today that hopefully will help in some small way. I know that there are other groups that are soliciting your donations. However, if your heart is inclined to support Help I’m Hurting, I can assure you that your donation will be well used.

Continue to pray and support the Port Arthur Black Community!!

Your Brother in Struggle,

Baba Leonard,
Convener, IBW/Black Family Summit

To All of my Brothers and Sisters in the Faith,

As you know, Hurricane Harvey has devastated our city, Port Arthur, Texas. Over 85% of the city was covered by water. Many of our residents have been evacuated to distant cities to be sheltered, leaving behind what little possessions they owned and not knowing if or when they will return. Long lines are already formed by those seeking goods, help, and even if they can afford to buy still there are lines of people simply trying to make purchase of needed things. Through it all, we are determined to offer sacrifices of praise and thanksgiving to our God.

As of this date, as we move through phases of recovery there are some things that are apparently more needed than others. We have opened a Community Intake Center at Mt. Sinai Baptist Church were many people that are affected by this Disaster are registering their family needs and making it possible for us to give the right service. At present, we are providing a list of things indicated by the Port Arthur, Texas community. Your response will not only be appreciated by the people, but as well give glory to our God.

The Pastors of our city are working together and our network is becoming stronger. We are receiving goods at our warehouse and distributing them to other points of distribution throughout our city. Thousands of people have come to our distribution center and received of the donations you have given. We are still coordinating efforts with the National Red Cross and other agencies to provide assistance. Below is a listing of how you can help us.
