Andros Island.

Editors Note: We are sharing a petition started by De’Ann Forbes directed to the Bahamas government, Bahamas National Trust, Bahamian enviroment Protection Foundation, Save The Bays and Forfar Field Station.

By De’Ann Forbes — For many years our country has been exploited and our natural resources taken from us the Bahamian people. There is no way we the Androsians will sell our rights and the rights of our future generations. How many of our people have applied for crown land to farm, build houses and businesses and have yet to get an acre. The Chinese now wants to mine 500,000 acres in Andros. What will happen to our Wild Life, Mangroves, Pine Forests and so much more. We can make Andros great, but not by destroying our Island. Think my people now is the time to wake up and fight for the change that we talked so much about. Awake my people, we’re not dog’s that we should beg for scraps. We are Bahamians. We are Androsians and we demand to be treated as first class citizens in our country.

Home To Mythical Creatures

According to local myth, two mystical creatures call the island home — the large bird-like ‘Chickcharnee’ that lives in the pine forests, and the ‘Lusca’ sea monster that could suck you into the mesmerizing blue holes.

Largest National Park System

The largest protected area in The Bahamas, this system includes five national parks — the Blue Holes National Park, Crab Replenishment Reserve, North & South Marine Parks, and the West Side National Park.

Most Blue Holes Per Square Mile

Andros has a vast number of ocean and inland blue holes, the highest concentration and largest variety of any solid landmass in the world. They are home to unique cave fish and invertebrates, some not found anywhere else.

3rd-Largest Fringing Barrier Reef

The reef is 190 miles long, drops to about eight feet on the island side and plunges to more than 6,000 feet in the Tongue of the Ocean. It is unique in the region because of its size, lush coral growth, and minimal coral disease.
