As a tireless advocate for the U.N. Decade for People of African Descent and reparatory justice, Danny Glover has been with IBW every step of the way in our successful effort to intensify the U.S. and global reparations movements. Highlights of the amazing work of the National African American Reparations Commission
- Convened a historic National/International Summit on Reparations in New York City which featured a dialogue with the CARICOM Reparations Commission, Chaired by Professor Sir Hilary Beckles. The Summit was attended by representatives from 22 countries including Brazil, Guyana, Belize, Costa Rica, Jamaica, Barbados, Antigua, Martinique, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, U.S. Virgin Islands, Canada, Great Britain, Sweden and France. The Summit was a major galvanizing point for the U.S. and global reparations movements.
- Adopted a Preliminary 10 Point Reparations Program for people of African descent in the U.S. and convened highly successful Hearings and Town Hall Meetings in Atlanta and New Orleans. The Hearings and Town Hall Meetings are designed to educate Black people about the Reparations Program and receive input for the final Program. NAARC hopes to convene additional Hearings/Town Hall Meetings in Houston, Los Angeles, Oakland, St. Louis, Chicago, Detroit and Washington, D.C. — Click here to read the program.
- Co-Hosted the Reparations Braintrust with Congressman John Conyers at the Annual Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Inc.’s Annual Legislative Conferences. — Video available here.
- Worked with Congressman John Conyers and his staff to transform HR-40 from a mere “study bill” to a “remedy bill” that will establish a Commission to examine reparations proposals for African Americans.
Other Important Reparations Work
- NAARC is also working with organizations in Columbia to assist them in establishing a National Reparations Commission.
- NAARC is focusing on Colleges and Universities in the U.S. which benefited from enslavement, e.g., Georgetown, University of Chicago, Yale, Harvard, Dartmouth, to assist students and community-based organizations to demand and receive reparations.
Winning Reparations is Possible
- The City of Chicago recently awarded compensation to the victims of torture at the hands of corrections officers in the city/county jails.
- The University of Edinburgh, Scotland just awarded reparations to the University of the West Indies for profiting from enslavement of Africans.
IBW and NAARC Urgently Need
Your Financial Support to Continue the Fight
One of the major limitations of the reparations movement is the lack of adequate financial resources, MONEY, to mount sustained campaigns. We are really on the verge of winning victories in the quest for reparations, but all to often we are forced to scratch and scrape up resources to move forward. NAARC would like to convene the additional Hearings and Town Hall Meetings noted above and to mount a major education and advocacy campaign to maximize Co-Sponsors of HR-40, but we do not have the resources to do it.
That’s where you come in. Please heed the appeal by Danny Glover and make a generous, tax-deductible donation to help NAARC make the improbable, possible. Our immediate goal is just $25,000 to convene the next two Hearings/Town Hall Meetings. If 250 friends/supporters of reparations would donate $100, we will achieve this modest goal.
